Education at Earth Train

One of Earth Train's goals for the Mamoní Valley Preserve is to provide facilities and curricula for undergraduate classes in Restoration Ecology, Conservation Biology, General Ecology, Environmental Policy, Sustainable Development, and Music. Our vision is that college-level courses in these areas will use our facilities and curricula in any of three different ways: as a one- to two-week field trip that's part of a larger class at the home institution; as a full semester course in the Mamoní Valley Preserve (and other parts of Panamá); or as a program in which several courses could be combined, such as ecology, anthropology, environmental policy, and Spanish.

We've also opened our doors to a number of our partner organizations to host workshops in fields from filmmaking to architecture and design to music and beyond. We understand how important experiential education is to understanding the real world, and we're happy to offer our campus as a base camp for a diverse array of educational programs.

Please feel free to read more about the opportunities that we've provided so far:

  • December 2010 BISD Systems Thinking Workshop - In late December of 2010, Earth Train had the honor of hosting David Stroh to conduct a week-long workshop in systems thinking with a diverse group of college youth.
  • February 2009 Brandeis Field Trip - From February 15-22, 2009, Earth Train co-director Glenn Adelson brought his Restoration Ecology class from Brandeis University to Panamá to initiate the educational program at the Mamoní Valley Preserve.
  • Junglewood Micro-Documentary Pilot Program - Also in February, Earth Train hosted a filmmaking workshop for indigenous youth, sponsored by the founders of Junglewood.

Also, as an extension of our research programs, we hope to provide various educational opportunities in natural resource management training, as well as facilitate workshops with local communities to plan for the projected effects of climate change scenarios on critical resources.
